Buyer's guide

7 things to know before buying final expense insurance (if you're 50 to 85)

Most people buy this policy in a single phone call. Here's what to understand before you make that call, including the one detail agents don't always mention.

It's whole life insurance, not term. It doesn't expire.

Term life is what most people bought in their 30s and 40s, and it runs out at a set age. If you've been told you're "too old" for life insurance, that's usually term.

Final expense is a small whole life policy. As long as premiums are paid, it stays in force for life. There's no age it turns off.

You can qualify without a medical exam.

Two kinds of plans exist. Simplified issue asks a handful of yes/no health questions over the phone and gives you the better rate. Guaranteed issue asks nothing at all within the age range, at a higher rate.

Neither involves a nurse visit, blood work, or medical records. A licensed agent decides which one you fit in about five minutes.

The coverage amounts are small on purpose.

Policies run from about $2,000 to $25,000. That's not a limitation; it's the point. It's sized to a real bill, not to replace an income.

Funeral with viewing and burial$8,300
Funeral with viewing and cremation$6,280
Cemetery plot, vault, marker$2,000–$5,000 (varies by region)

Most people choose $10,000 to $15,000: the service, plus a cushion for medical bills, a credit card balance, or travel for family.

4

Your premium is locked. It never goes up.

The rate you're quoted at 64 is the rate you pay at 84. This is different from term policies that renew at higher rates, and from some group or bank-offered coverage that re-prices every five years.

It also means the earlier you lock it in, the lower the lifetime rate. Age is the biggest factor in pricing, so each birthday raises the starting premium.

5

The benefit never shrinks, and it usually pays out within days.

The amount you choose is the amount paid to your beneficiary. It doesn't decrease as you age, and it's generally paid directly to the person you name, not to the funeral home, so they control how it's used.

Life insurance death benefits are generally not subject to federal income tax for the beneficiary. Confirm your own situation with a tax professional.

6

Ask about the two-year rule. Not every plan has one.

This is the detail that gets skipped. Guaranteed-issue plans (the ones with no health questions) usually carry a graded benefit: if death from natural causes occurs in the first two years, the payout is a return of premiums plus interest, not the full amount. Accidental death is typically covered in full from day one.

Simplified-issue plans often pay the full benefit from day one. That's the trade-off for answering a few health questions.

A good agent tells you which one you're getting before you apply. If they don't mention it, ask: "Is this first-day full coverage, or graded?"

The quote takes five minutes, and you're not committing to anything.

Here's the whole process: you call, an agent licensed in your state asks your age, state, coverage amount, and (for simplified issue) a few health questions. They quote a monthly rate. You can apply on the same call, or take the number and think it over.

Have your date of birth ready. That's it.

Common questions

How much does it cost per month?

It depends on age, state, gender, tobacco use, and coverage amount. There's no accurate way to say without a quote, which is why it's done by phone.

Can I be turned down?

For simplified-issue plans, some health conditions lead to a decline, in which case the agent will usually offer a guaranteed-issue plan instead. Guaranteed issue accepts everyone within the age range.

Is this a government benefit?

No. It's private whole life insurance. Affordable Coverage is not affiliated with Medicare, Social Security, or any government agency.

Who answers the phone?

An independent licensed life insurance agent in your state. Affordable Coverage is a marketing service that connects callers to licensed agents and may be compensated for doing so.
