Add your costs and existing funds
All amounts are in U.S. dollars. Enter zero only when an item does not apply; if a cost is unknown, obtain an estimate before relying on the result. Blank fields are not silently treated as zero.
What the result means
The calculation adds unpaid funeral services, final-placement costs, and other chosen expenses. It subtracts dedicated savings and the existing insurance amount you entered. If resources exceed expenses, the gap is shown as zero and the excess is displayed separately.
A $0 result means the resources entered equal or exceed the costs entered. It does not prove that all expenses are covered or that the money can be accessed immediately. Confirm the amounts, availability, and payment timing.
A worked example
| Hypothetical input | Amount |
|---|---|
| Unpaid funeral services | $4,000 |
| Cemetery or final placement | $2,000 |
| Other selected expenses | $500 |
| Dedicated savings | $1,500 |
| Existing insurance allocated to these costs | $1,000 |
The total expense is $6,500. Resources are $2,500. The resulting gap is $4,000. These figures were created only to demonstrate the calculation; they are not funeral prices, policy quotes, or a recommendation to buy $4,000 of insurance.
Avoid these three double-counting mistakes
- Prepaid services: leave already-paid services out of unpaid expenses. Do not also deduct their contract value as savings.
- Shared resources: do not allocate the same savings or benefit to both these expenses and another essential family need.
- Package inclusions: check whether transport, the container, or other items are already included before adding them again.
What this calculator leaves out
It does not project inflation, investment returns, future premiums, cash values, taxes, debt liability, eligibility for benefits, or claim-processing time. It does not assume you qualify for Social Security, veterans’ benefits, or local assistance. Any confirmed assistance should be considered separately with its restrictions and payment timing.
It also cannot verify whether a policy is active or whether the full face amount would be available. Check existing coverage with the insurer before relying on it. If the information is uncertain, calculate another scenario using only resources you can confirm.
What to do with your estimate
Use the result as a conversation aid. If you want to explore insurance, compare available benefit amounts, actual premiums, and early-year provisions. A product may have minimums or increments that do not match the calculated gap.
